Why it matters
Wild plants, fungi and algae connect the world's most biodiverse landscapes to the everyday things we rely on, teas, medicines, cosmetics, food, fragrances. Behind every one of them is a landscape, a species and a community that most people never see but we all depend on.
Friends of FairWild exists because we believe biodiversity, livelihoods and responsible business can thrive together if the people doing the harvesting are treated as partners in that future.
Most of the global trade in wild ingredients still happens with little independent oversight, of the roughly 3,000 wild plant species in international trade, only 21% have ever had their extinction risk assessed.

Fairness and collaboration are at the heart of how FairWild works. By partnering with kindred organisations and individuals, we are able to support people on the ground, maintain our Standard and system, and cover essential costs, allowing us to remain the leading specialists in responsible wild harvesting.
As a Friend of Fairwild, you are sharing our vision of a world where responsibly harvested wild ingredients can support livelihoods, conservation efforts and resilient businesses. Contributions to Friends of FairWild go towards a fund which supports three main areas:
Operator Support: Helps small-scale harvesting operations reach and maintain FairWild certification, building sustainability and resilience, (and helping covering the audit and capacity costs they couldn't manage alone).
Research & Standards: Funds new tools and research that keep the FairWild Standard ahead of emerging risks to biodiversity, livelihoods and human rights.
Community Development: Connects harvesters, communities, businesses, researchers and NGOs who would otherwise never meet, building the relationships a fair wild-trade system depends on.
