Pelargonium (Pelargonium sidoides)

South Africa

The Schwabe Group comprises several different affiliated companies in the pharmaceutical and health industry. All of the companies within the Schwabe Group focus on plants as the basis for developing pharmaceuticals and health products. Since 2021, Schwabe has been working with their South African suppliers of Pelargonium sidoides to implement FairWild certification for this key ingredient in one of their pharmaceutical lines. Two of their South African suppliers achieved FairWild certification in 2022.

Community education

Schwabe’s suppliers source Pelargonium from rural chiefdoms in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, where many collectors are reliant on the harvest for their income. Schwabe supports collector communities through their Umckaloabo Foundation, supporting local education.

Replenish the roots

The root of Pelargonium is the prized part of the plant; but if roots are harvested carelessly, it can prevent the plant regenerating and impact the whole population. Schwabe’s suppliers ensure that all collectors are trained and practice harvesting methods that leave a portion of the plant in the ground to regenerate, and rotate which area is harvested from in a 5 year cycle.
