The FairWild-certified collection operation in El Salvador is a co-operative which has been collecting Peru Balsam for over a hundred years. They are supported by Nelixia through which ingredient sales are available.

Nelixia believes Peru Balsam should be harvested naturally as it has been for generations and the company supports many initiatives working towards this within the established collective turned co-operative in El Salvador.

Improving safety

FairWild certified collectors, together with Nelixia, developed a package for wild harvesters. This includes a safety furniture package, a private insurance offer and a mutual guarantee fund. Being inclusive, preventive, and fair, is the purpose of FairWild certification, and the benefit of the premium fund continues to expand year on year.

Protecting ancient trees

Many Peru Balsam trees are much older than the humans alive today. Wild harvesters called Balsameros have learnt how to take care of the trees, thrive alongside them and the importance of coexisting with nature. Nelixia and these certified collectors are working on the botanical, environmental and regeneration aspects of these ancient trees to ensure that their survival and the livelihoods of the Balsameros are secured.

FairWild certification helps us to show to our customers that our Peru Balsam has been harvested with respect for the ancestral skills of the Balsameros, and consideration for the majestic trees and their home in the precious El Salvador coastal rainforest. Traceability, transparency and community empowerment are central to how we do business at Nelixia, and FairWild certification shows that we live up to the high standards we have set for ourselves.
